Soil Testing for Lead

Thank you for your interest in soil lead testing!

Before you start, gather three clear plastic Ziplock baggies (sandwich size) and a garden trowel. With a Sharpie marker, label the baggies clearly with the following: Street Soil, Yard Soil, Dripline Soil, and property address. If you are collecting samples for more than one lot (or unique address), you should collect three samples from each individual lot.

Please sample soil from the upper two inches only. Try to avoid collecting large sticks, rocks, or lots of plant matter. Fill the bags about 3/4 full.

Collect your samples from each unique address

  • Street Soil: collect some soil in an area near the street
  • Yard Soil: collect some soil out in the middle of your yard or play area
  • Dripline Soil: collect some soil under the drip line of your house, within 2 to 3 feet of the house

Deliver your samples to IUPUI

Package up your samples in a heavy envelope or small box. Inside the envelope, include a sheet with your name, email address, and the address where the samples were collected, printed clearly. With this information, we can send you a report via email detailing what we found.
