Walter J. Daly, IU School of Medicine’s seventh dean, is remembered as a leader who prioritized innovation, expanded clinical education and elevated the school’s visibility throughout the state. He died on April 6, 2024.

Remembering Stuart Kleit

The Department of Medicine is saddened to share news of the passing of Dr. Stuart Kleit, who was a founder of the department’s Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, and a passionate leader within Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana University Health. He died Wednesday, Sept. 20, at his home in Florida after a brief illness. He was 90 years old.

Peter Arnold's experience with urology started as a child on the other side of the exam room door. Now Arnold is an intern in the urology residency at IU School of Medicine.

Neurosurgery alum reflects on robust medical education at IU

Robert B. Sloan, MD, looks back on his time at Indiana University fondly. The Indianapolis physician spent his entire higher education career at IU. He earned his bachelor’s degree at IU-Bloomington and completed his medical degree and residency at IU School of Medicine. Sloan, who is the sole neurosurgeon at Community Hospital East, carried out the bulk of that time at IU studying medicine, specifically neurosurgery as a resident in the Department of Neurological Surgery from 2000-2006.

New IU Cardiovascular fellowship program to boost innovation


The Indiana University School of Medicine in cooperation with the Cardiovascular Institute and CVI's research arm, the Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center, will launch a new cardiovascular fellowship this summer that will fuel innovation in cardiovascular medicine. The Anderson Cardiovascular Innovation Fellowship is a 12-month training program designed to develop fellows from novice physicians to highly skilled cardiovascular innovators. Chirag D. Shah, MD, MPH, is the first fellow selected to participate in this new fellowship and will begin his fellowship in July.

IU otolaryngology alumna recognized with endowed lectureship

The Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery is hosting the Inaugural Allison K. Royer Women in Otolaryngology Endowed Lectureship on March 22, 2023, at IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis. It is one of the first women in otolaryngology endowed lectureships in the country.

Nominations sought for 2024 Watanabe Prize in Translational Research

IU School of Medicine is accepting nominations until May 1, 2023, for the 2024 August M. Watanabe Prize in Translational Research, one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious research awards recognizing senior investigators focused on shepherding scientific discoveries into new therapies for patients.

Bilimoria brings energy and excitement to IU Surgery

There is an energy permeating through the Department of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine, with a new leader bringing an ambitious vision for how to advance an already strong department. Karl Y. Bilimoria, MD, MS, FACS, became the eighth chair of the Department of Surgery in September, succeeding Gary Dunnington, M.D. 

Bilimoria, the Jay L. Grosfeld Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, is not new to IU. He graduated from IU School of Medicine in 2003 and has become a nationally revered physician-scientist in health care quality, innovation and policy.

Many IU School of Medicine alumni are working to improve public health in Indiana by serving as local health officers and contributing to the Governor’s Public Health Commission report, which calls for major public health system improvements.

Otolaryngology alumni continue practice of collaboration

The Department of Otolaryngology has a longstanding history of its residents placing into nationally recognized fellowship programs and hospitals. Most residents—about 60%—enter fellowship programs. The rest go straight to work in hospitals and private practices. And about half of the residents practice academic medicine.
