Mohammad Al-Haddad, MD, MSc, has been selected to serve as Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology after serving as Interim Director since March 2020. As the director, he will also be named Naga P. Chalasani Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

In this role, Dr. Al-Haddad will continue to be responsible for leading the research, education and clinical activities of the division, which  is one of the largest divisions of its kind in the United States.

Dr. Al-Haddad’s clinical and research interests include the diagnosis and management of pre-malignant and malignant GI conditions, pancreatic disease, applications of endosonography in cancer staging and tissue acquisition, and innovative and developmental endoscopy. He has authored or co-authored over 240 papers in peer-reviewed medical literature, 16 book chapters, 18 practice guidelines and curricula, and presented over 320 abstracts and lectures in national and international conferences. Dr. Al-Haddad served on the editorial board of several top tier GI journals and currently is the Associate Editor of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He also served in several leadership roles within the GI and Endoscopy national and international societies, and currently serves on the Board of Governors of the American College of Gastroenterology.

He completed his medical residency at Cleveland Clinic and his gastroenterology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Then, in 2007, Dr. Al-Haddad joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at IU, where he also obtained his Master’s degree in Clinical Research.

Dr. Al-Haddad's new role as Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is effective January 1, 2023.
