Emergency Medicine Visiting Students

During the emergency medicine fourth-year clerkship (Emergency Medicine elective 93ZE720) at IU School of Medicine, students push themselves to work independently and participate in every aspect of patient care in a safe, supervised and collegial environment. Students have the opportunity to work directly with worldwide emergency medicine leaders in research, toxicology, ultrasound, EMS, pediatrics, administration, critical care and medical education. The faculty and staff of IU School of Medicine strive to provide all visiting students with a rewarding and special experience. Interested students may email Jim Graber-Slater with questions.

Rotation Structure

Visiting fourth-year medical students at Indiana University School of Medicine rotate at either Eskenazi Health or Methodist Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center. Both clinical sites are Level 1 Trauma Centers serving more than 100,000 patients annually and are located in downtown Indianapolis. Additionally, both facilities are training sites for the IU School of Medicine Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Students participate in all aspects of patient care under the direct supervision of attending physicians and third-year emergency medicine residents with specific training in medical education.

The emergency medicine rotation consists of 14 clinical shifts, simulation, suture lab and lectures. Visiting students are welcomed and encouraged to attend resident didactics and other residency events, including journal club and wellness/social events. Additional opportunities to rotate with EMS, toxicology, and/or ultrasound are available on request.

Admissions

Visiting students are accepted for August through October. Rotation applications are accepted only through VSLO. Please monitor this page for announcement of VSLO opening date tentatively scheduled for mid-April 2024.
