Current Faculty Research
Fellows are offered a variety of research options during their training.Our division houses multiple well-funded and successful basic and clinical science researchers. Divisional researchers are actively engaged in cutting edge research in COPD/emphysema, interstitial and immunologic lung disease, transplant immunology, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary fungal and opportunistic infections. Clinical research projects are ongoing in asthma, ICU delirium and long-term complications among ICU survivors. Several fellows have pursued further training in ethics as part of their research training.In addition, collaborations exist between our division and others providing numerous opportunities for inter-divisional and interdepartmental research projects.
Clinical Research
Those who wish to pursue clinical research training are strongly encouraged to participate in the Clinical Investigator and Translational Education (CITE) program.This two-year program is structured for those wishing to pursue careers in clinical research.It results in a Master of Science in Clinical Research degree, and structures the mentoring process with an established faculty scientist.This program is geared specifically toward those planning to apply for a K23 NIH grant, or comparable young investigator award. Fellow participants in this program will have their tuition supported by the division.
Basic and Clinical Science T-32 Training Program
The T-32 Multidisciplinary Training Program is providing postdoctoral fellowship training for basic science and clinical investigators in lung sciences and critical care medicine. Each year, one MD fellow and two PhD postdoctoral fellows are offered training in this program and particular effort is made to recruit trainees from diverse groups. Our program provides superb fellowship training experiences, scholarly productivity and progress toward the academic career development of our trainees. This postdoctoral training program retains the existent classical successful elements of our curriculum for training of basic science and clinical investigators, with several important additions which should substantially enhance our fellows’ preparedness to the recent profound changes in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and in the structure of academic careers. We provide training in lung injury, repair and immunobiology (Departments of Medicine, Micro/Immunology Pathology), lung physiology (Departments of Cellular & Integrative Physiology, Medicine, Pediatrics) and molecular signaling and targeting in lung disease (Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics). To offer exciting opportunities which reflect the rapid technologic advances in lung research and meet the needs of the strategic NHLBI plan, we offer novel training program initiatives in molecular imaging(Department of Medicine) and regenerative medicine(Department of Medicine). We are also working to increase learning opportunities in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry sector and increase training collaborations with Pediatric Pulmonology.
Joint Fellowship in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine and Ethics
Fellows have the option of pursuing a clinical ethics fellowship as their scholarly work during the second and third years of their fellowship. Fellows will complete a nine month Ethics Fellowship at the Charles Warren Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics from September through May of the second year and will participate in ethics consultation activities during the second and third years of their fellowship. Fellows will complete a research project focusing on an ethical issue in pulmonary or critical care medicine, and this project will be expected to be of publishable quality. Fellows may also apply to pursue a concurrent Masters in Clinical Science through the CITE Program, or a Masters degree in Philosophy/Bioethics through IUPUI. Fellows will be jointly mentored by a member of the IU Pulmonary and Critical Care Faculty and a member of the Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics faculty. We seek candidates who are interested in an academic career in pulmonary or critical care medicine with a focus on medical ethics.
