Musculoskeletal Health Sciences PhD Program

The PhD program in Musculoskeletal Health Sciences (MSHS) provides training to graduate students who wish to pursue a career in academia, industry, government, or other related professions. The program is based out of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health (ICMH) within the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis. The ICMH is one of the premier centers for bone, joint, and muscle research, and offers the only PhD of this type in the U.S.

While the focus of the PhD program is on the musculoskeletal system, interdisciplinary training opportunities that span topics such as aging, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, diabetes, exercise, kidney disease, nutrition, and tissue repair/regeneration are available.

The program includes biomedical researchers from the School of Medicine, the School of Health and Human Sciences, and the Biomedical Engineering program, many of whom are leaders in their respective field.  These faculty provide a wide range of research opportunities from basic and translational studies to clinical studies in the dynamic field of musculoskeletal health.
