Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Elective Program

Indiana University School of Medicine is working to diversify the workforce by graduating more physicians from underrepresented groups and ensuring that all trainees are prepared to provide culturally competent care for patients from all walks of life. The Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Elective Program supports 4th year medical students and qualified 3rd year medical students attending a U.S. medical school including U.S. territories, from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine.

This program is designed to:

Increase awareness of opportunities in academic medicine
Encourage students from diverse backgrounds to apply to IU School of Medicine's residency programs.

Submissions for the Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Elective Program are accepted on a rolling basis.

Application

Eligibility

All applicants must be full-time medical students in good academic standing at Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) accredited U.S. medical schools including U.S. territories AND meet all of the criteria:

Currently a 4th year or qualified 3rd year medical student. Qualified 3rd year medical students must have completed core rotation in all of the following specialties:
- Pediatrics
- Internal Medicine
- Obstetrics & Gynecology
- Surgery

Preference will be given to applicants whose personal statements establish that their background and/or perspective will contribute to the school's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

Length of rotation

Rotations are four weeks in duration and are subject to space availability.

Mentoring and networking opportunities

Each student will be paired with a faculty member in their areas of interest that will serve as a mentor and advisor. They will be given the opportunity to have a personal meeting with the residency program director or associate program director provided the student has not yet entered the match process. They will also be paired with a resident, ideally from a similar background, who will serve as a peer mentor and resource during the student’s visit. They shall also be able to attend educational activities of the department.

Financial Assistance

The program will pay a $2,000 stipend only to out-of-state visiting elective students, to support costs associated with participation. Participants will receive compensation upon successful completion of the rotation.

Application

To ensure that Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Elective participants are placed at the correct elective sites, follow the steps below.

Complete the Visiting Elective program application.
Receive correspondence on the status of your application from the IU School of Medicine Office of Diversity.
**Please note that participation in the Visiting Elective program is contingent upon availability of visiting electives.
Complete the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) application. Submit all required items for IU School of Medicine, and your desired elective. The application must include:

A personal statement
One letter of recommendation
Curriculum Vitae
An official medical school transcript.

**Please note VSLO application fees will apply.**

There are a limited number of visiting elective positions available each academic year. The Office of Diversity accepts visiting elective applications on a rolling basis.

Other eligible programs

If you are a successful candidate in this program, and are invited back for a residency interview, then you qualify for the Underrepresented in Medicine Residency and Fellowship Second Look Program. This program provides funding to support residency or fellowship interview visits to IU School of Medicine. Support is available for up to $250 for an in-state candidate and up to $500 for an out-of-state candidate.
